Visionary Fellowship

Investing in disabled filmmakers with the funding, mentorship, and community they need to create short films and leverage them into their first features.

About

The Visionary Fellowship is a year-long program that invests in disabled filmmakers with the funding, mentorship and community they need to make a short film and leverage it into their first feature film.

Disabled filmmakers have historically been drastically undervalued by the entertainment industry, and this program reverses that trend by providing significant resources to promising and highly-resourceful disabled writer/directors. The program is uniquely designed to cover the transition between making a short and preparing and packaging a debut feature, ensuring they have ample support to connect the dots between the two.

FAQ

Background

Why did you create The Visionary Fellowship?

Disabled filmmakers have historically received the least investment (both financially and otherwise) in their careers and their stories. This program aims to reverse this trend by providing significant resources to promising and highly-resourceful disabled filmmakers.

The program is uniquely designed to cover the transition between making a short and preparing and packaging their debut feature, ensuring they have ample support to connect the dots between the two, which we’ve found is the trickiest part of the journey.

What all is included in the Fellowship?

The Fellowship includes $55,000 in funding over the course of the program.

This includes:

  • $25,000 to produce a short film with an experienced crew

  • A $15,000 unrestricted grant to support living expenses

  • Up to $7,000 to provide health insurance for the course of the program

  • Up to $2,500 to market the short film

  • Up to $2,500 to support the Fellow’s access needs during the course of the program

  • Up to $3,000 to cover travel costs to Los Angeles for the duration of filming and the short film showcase

These categories have some ability to flex on a case-by-case basis, if, for example, a Fellow already has health insurance or lives in L.A., but needs a larger budget for living expenses or access needs.

The Fellowship also includes access to bespoke mentorship and workshops hosted by leading filmmakers on a range of essential topics related to writing, prep, production and post-production; a unique opportunity to work/shadow on the sets of the other Fellows’ projects; a supportive and robust community of disabled creatives across film and television; and an industry screening of all the short films created during the Fellowship, which will include creative executives, agents, and managers.

How can Fellows use the unrestricted funds?

However they want— Fellows can use it to cover living expenses and other project-related fees—and it’s intended to give them the time and space to further develop their projects.

Is the Fellowship taxable income?

If you receive a Fellowship, we recommend you speak to an accountant to make a determination on the tax status of the Fellowship money.

How do I apply for the Visionary Fellowship?

We welcome applications from all interested individuals. We also encourage referrals from agents, managers, and creative executives who recognize exceptional talent. In addition, we invite Accelerate Fellowship alumni with interest in the feature film space to apply.

What does the application process include?

The application process will feature the following rounds:

  1. Qualifications and Personal Statements Assessment: In the initial round, Inevitable will review applicants' qualifications and personal statements. This helps us gain insight into applicants backgrounds, experiences, and motivations, ensuring a strong alignment with the program's objectives.

  2. Visual Material Review: To better understand the applicant's creative vision and storytelling abilities, Inevitable Foundation will carefully examine applicants’ submitted materials, which may include short films, lookbooks, storyboards or any other relevant visual content.

  3. Recommendations from other Filmmakers: Inevitable will present the top applicants to a panel of diverse, disabled and non-disabled filmmakers. This panel will provide valuable insights and recommendations to Inevitable Foundation’s Board of Directors regarding selection for the program. Their expertise and unique viewpoint will contribute to the final decision-making process, ensuring that a wide range of voices is represented in the program's cohort.

Do I need to be disabled to receive a Visionary Fellowship?

Yes. All of our programs are for individuals that self-identify as disabled. This includes all kinds of disabilities, including physical, intellectual, developmental, psychiatric, visible, or invisible disabilities, as well as chronic conditions, mental illness, and neurodivergence.

Do I need to submit finished scripts in my application?

Yes. The application requires one finished feature script and one polished short film script that is ready for production.

Do you accept Visionary Fellows from outside the United States?

Due to the location-specific component, at this time we are only able to accept applicants from the United States and Canada. Please note that interested parties from outside the United States are subject to additional review in order to comply with U.S. Treasury Department regulations.

Is the Visionary Fellowship for a person or a specific project?

The Visionary Fellowship supports multiple projects, both a short and a feature film, from an individual filmmaker. This Fellowship is one of Inevitable Foundation’s more project-focused programs, which is why polished scripts are required for application.

I’m part of a filmmaking team, can we apply together?

Teams may apply and share the Fellowship when both are disabled. For filmmaking partners where one partner is not disabled, the disabled team member will be the recipient of the grant in entirety, and there may be additional screening of the non-grantee filmmaking parter, to ensure we’re creating a supportive and collaborative experience for all of the filmmakers selected for the program.

Fellowship Details

How is the Visionary Fellowship structured?

  • Applications open in May 2024. The deadline for submission has been extended to August 11th, 2024.

  • Winners will be announced in November 2024.

  • Program onboarding will begin in November 2024.

  • Short film production will occur in Spring 2025.

  • Towards the end of post-production on the short film, the Fellowship will start to focus on the packaging of the feature film.

  • The short film showcase will occur in Fall/Winter 2025.

How will the in-person production component of the Fellowship ensure accessibility for all parties?

We’re deeply committed to ensuring accessibility during the in-person component of the Fellowship, including by innovating and finding creative solutions. While some factors, such as union regulations and local or state laws, may be beyond our immediate control, we are committed to doing everything within our power to accommodate the needs of all participants. The application asks for specific access needs and we are happy to answer any questions on this topic. While we might not have all of the answers, we are committed to finding solutions.

What is the Industry Showcase?

The Industry Showcase is an opportunity for Fellows to present their completed short films and upcoming feature films to an industry audience of producers, creative executives, showrunners, and fellow filmmakers. It serves as a platform to highlight the talent and creativity of each Visionary Fellow, fostering connections and potential opportunities in the industry.

Can I complete the Visionary Fellowship while employed?

It is possible to complete the Visionary Fellowship while employed part-time or on a freelance basis. However, it's important to note that there are time commitments involved, especially during certain phases of the program. During the initial four months, plan to dedicate 15-20 hours per week to the Fellowship. Months 4-6 are the most demanding, requiring 30+ hours per week, including a three-week shoot in Los Angeles. In the second half of the year-long program, the time demands lessen, making other employment more feasible.

Can I complete the Visionary Fellowship while in another fellowship or award program?

You can, but because of the workload associated with the Visionary Fellowship and other industry fellowship programs, we don’t recommend trying to complete both at the same time.

Can I be chosen as a Visionary Fellow if I’ve already benefited from another Inevitable Foundation program?

Yes. All our programs are designed to be complementary, and applying for receiving benefits from other programs does not exclude you from the Visionary Fellowship.

Selection

Who makes selections for the Visionary Fellowship?

We’ve assembled a diverse selection committee of other filmmakers working at the intersection of entertainment and disability who will work with Inevitable Foundation staff to evaluate applications and make recommendations to Inevitable Foundation’s board of directors.

When are new cohorts of Fellows selected?

The first cohort will be selected in Fall 2024.

How many Fellows are selected?

We aim to name five (5) Visionary Fellows in 2024. This number is subject to change based on the application process.

How long is a Fellowship?

The Fellowship is 12 months, with onboarding starting in November 2024.

Reporting

What are the reporting requirements for the Visionary Fellowship?

The reporting requirements for the Visionary Fellowship include collaborating with the Fellowship team on production and grant budget management during the first half of the program, and completing an exit interview and survey at the conclusion of the Fellowship, where fellows can reflect on their experience and offer feedback on the program.

After Visionary Fellows create their short films, do they retain the rights to the film?

Fellows will retain ownership of their short films and all material created and worked on throughout the program. Inevitable Foundation does not claim any ownership or economic rights over Fellow’s creative materials, which includes the short film and feature film. Inevitable Foundation should, however, be credited as producers on the short film.

Does Inevitable Foundation retain any right to the feature film that is developed in the program?

Inevitable Foundation does not claim any ownership or economic rights over Fellow’s creative materials, which includes the feature film that the Fellow develops in the program. If the film is produced, Inevitable Foundation should be credited as having supported the film.

Short Film Production

Can there be producers attached to the materials I submit?

There can be producers attached to the feature scripts you submit as part of your application, but they will not be able to be directly involved with the production of the short film made through the Visionary Fellowship program. The short film cannot have any producers attached.

Can I submit material based on existing IP?

Applicants should have the rights to all of the material they’re submitting as a part of their application, meaning that if a project is based on existing IP, the applicant should already have the rights for adaptation secured at the time of application.

Are there any limitations around what the short film can include?

Scripts with any of the following will require thorough reasoning and a plan for execution within the budget constraints of the program. This plan will be evaluated during the application process. This includes films that contain:

  • Animals

  • Minors, including children or babies

  • Pyrotechnics & fire

  • More than two geographically separate filming locations

  • Large crowds

  • Busy city streets

  • On-camera stunt work

  • Exclusively nighttime exteriors

Can I use outside financing in addition to the Visionary Fellowship grant to make my project?

For the film created within the program, participants are only permitted to utilize funding provided through the Visionary Fellowship. However, participants are able to receive in-kind donations for their productions such as donated equipment, locations and other services.

Do I need to have a budget created for my short film?

While it’s not essential that a participant has a budget prepared at the time they’re applying for the Visionary Fellowship, any materials that can showcase the applicant's plan for executing the project within the constraints of the program and the feasibility of their project will be taken into consideration during the selection process.

Does my project need to be about disability?

We’re primarily focused on supporting disabled filmmakers and investing in them to tell the stories that they’re most excited about. While this doesn’t mean that we expect projects to be about disability, we encourage applicants to take advantage of this opportunity to highlight disabled talent on screen.

Does it matter what genre my project is?

No! The most important thing is a strong story and point-of-view to the project. We accept projects from any genre, keeping in mind that we’re highlighting stories from disabled filmmakers that have universal elements and are commercially viable.

I’ve never made a short film, how do I give myself the best chance of being selected?

If you’ve never had the opportunity to make a short film, we encourage you to utilize all of the tools at your disposal to showcase your vision for your project. Lookbooks, storyboards, etc. There are plenty of ways to show that you have a clear idea of what it is you're wanting to convey visually.

Do I need to have my creative team/crew selected at the time I apply?

No. However, if there are frequent collaborators you’re hoping to work with on the project, please include information about them in a deck about the project.

Do I need to have my locations secured at the time I apply?

No, but you can disclose if you’ve been able to secure locations already.

What if the budget for my short film is more than $25,000?

For this program, we’re wanting to amplify filmmakers who are both excited and creative about working within production restraints. We’re excited to identify filmmakers who are able to leverage their creativity and entrepreneurial minds to execute a high quality project.

How long will I have to film my project?

Projects will film for 2-3 days each.
